Photography workshop in Iceland

Im Jahr 2013 hatte ich das Glück, dass mir mein Arbeitgeber zu einem Dienstjubiläum vier zusätzliche Ferienwochen schenkte. Diese Zeit verbrachte ich hauptsächlich in einem Natur­schutzgebiet nahe meines Wohnortes. Dort konnte ich viele tolle Photos machen, aber irgendwie verspürte ich den Drang, auch noch etwas spezielles zu unternehmen. Per Zufall las ich gerade zu der Zeit auf DPReview einen Artikel von Erez Marom über Island.

It was in the year 2013 when I got four additional weeks of holidays from my employer as a thank for my anniversary at the company. Most of that time I spent in a local nature reserve close to my home. I could take many nice pictures in that location, but somehow I wanted to do something really special as well with that time. Coincidentally I read an article about Iceland written by Erez Marom on DPReview.

Die Entscheidungsphase war kurz: Ich nahm Kontakt zu Erez Marom auf und bald darauf buchte ich einen Workshop in Island mit ihm und Iurie Belegurschi. Dies sollte mein erster Photoworkshop wer­den. Was ich zu erwarten hatte, wusste ich nicht. Das Programm sprach aber für sich:

Time for decision was short: Shortly after taking on contact to Erez Marom I was booked on a workshop in Iceland with him and Iurie Belegurschi. That was my first photography workshop. I had no idea what to expect. But the program was very promising:

1. Seljalandsfoss und Skogafoss
2. Vík í Mýrdal: Mýrdalsjökull, Reynisdrangar und Dyrhólaey
3. Vatnajökull: Jökulsarlón, Fjallsárlón und Breiðamerkurjökull
4. Þingvellir Nationalpark
5. Reykjavík

Direkt am Flughafen wurde ich von Erez und Iurie abgeholt. Wir fuhren nach Reykjavík zum Hotel. Wenig später trafen sich alle Teilneh­mer zum gemeinsamen Nachtessen und zur Besprechung des Programms für die folgenden Tage. Die Nacht war kurz, am Morgen ging es los und wir freuten uns alle sehr darauf.

I was picked up at the airport by Erez and Iurie. We drove to the hotel in Reykjavík. Later in the evening all participants met for diner. There was also information on the days to follow and how the workshop was going to work. The night was short, we started off in the morning and were very much looing forward to taking great pictures.

Der erste Tag wurde für die Fahrt zum ersten Hotelstandort, Vík, gebraucht. Dazwischen wa­ren zwei Stopps geplant. Also steigen wir um acht Uhr in den Bus und fuhren los. Nach knapp zwei Stunden erreichten wir per­fekt zur Dämmerung einen der grossen Was­serfälle im Süden Islands: Seljalandsfoss. Ja, wirklich, An­fang Januar startet die Dämmerung in Island kurz nach neun Uhr, Sonnenaufgang ist um 10:15. Also hatten wir genügend Zeit, uns einzurichten. Mit Spikes an den Schuhen konn­ten wir uns trotz Eis sicher bewegen, die weni­gen anderen Besucher waren ziemlich gefähr­lich unterwegs.

The first day was needed for the drive to the hotel in Vík. Two longer stops were planned. So we boarded the bus at eight in the morning and started the day. After about two hours we reached one of the beautiful waterfalls of southern Iceland: Seljalandsfoss. It was just about time for twilight. Yes, really, in January twilight in Iceland starts shortly after nine, sunrise was at 10:15. So we had plenty time to look around and find nice spots. Equipped with spikes on our shoes we could easily walk on the icy ground other than many of the tourists arriving later and walking very dangerously.

Kurz vor Mittag ging es weiter zum zweiten Wasserfall, dem berühmten Skogafoss. Dieser Wasserfall fällt wie ein Vorhang von einem Plateau herunter. Dank Fischerstiefeln konnten wir uns die besten Positionen für Photos erarbeiten, nämlich direkt aus dem Bach. Iurie posierte noch ganz nahe des Falls in der Gischt für Detailaufnahmen des Wasser­falls. Schliesslich ging die Fahrt weiter nach Vík, dem Ort, wo wir die nächsten zwei Nächte verbringen sollten.

Just before lunch time we changed to the second waterfall, famous Skogafoss. Its water falls like a curtain from a plateau. Thanks to our fishing boots we could reach the best positions for our photographs, in the middle of the stream comming from the waterfall. Iurie even posed at the proximity of the waterfall for nice details - and got wet. Finally we left again and were driven to Vík, the place to be for the following two nights.

Nach der Ankunft in Vík gingen wir zuerst an den berühmten schwarzen Strand, von wo man die Felsen Reynisdrangar sieht. Es war gerade kurz vor Sonnenuntergang. Die Sonne war beim eigentlichen Untergang aber verdeckt. Trotz­dem konnten wir schöne Bilder machen, so­wohl Kurz- wie auch Langzeitbelichtungen er­zeugten erstaunliche Effekte. Das ganze war aber ziemlich gefährlich, weniger für uns, sondern für die Ausrüstung: Der Wind war so stark, dass der glasige Sand wie ein Bom­bardement auf uns eintrommelte. Mit dem Rücken gegen den Wind schützten wir die Optik, an ein Wechseln der Objektive war nicht zu denken. Noch Monate später fand ich in Kleidung und Rucksack diese kleinen schwarzen Sandkörner.

After the arrival in Vík we immediately went to the famous black beach. From there the rocks of Reynisdrangar can be seen. It was just before sunset, but the sun was behind the clouds. Nonetheless we could get very nice pictures, long and short exposures that both created interesting effects. But it was a quite dangerous situation, not so much for us but for the equipment. The wind was so strong that it threw the glassy sand like a barrage on us. Keeping the back to the wind for my own sake I was able to protect the camera and lens, but there was no chance to change lenses. Even months later I could find that tiny black grains of sand in my clothes and backpack.

Am nächsten Morgen ging es wieder früh los, diesmal mit einem sogenannten Superjeep. Diese umgebauten 'Autos' haben riesige Rei­fen und können während der Fahrt Luft in die Pneus reinpumpen oder rauslassen. Wir wurden hin- und hergeschüttelt, bis wir schliesslich auf dem Gletscher Mýrdalsjökull stoppten. Dort fanden wir eine kleine Eishöhle vor, genossen aber auch die Landschaftsfoto­grafie im glazialen Umfeld. Das Wetter zeigte sich von der guten Seite, spannende Wolken­formationen und trocken.

The next morning we started early by super jeep. These altered 'cars' have huge tires and they can inflate and deflate them while driving. We were shaken and thrown to all sides until we finally stopped on glacier Mýrdalsjökull. There was a small ice cave that we could climb in. And there was enough glacial environment to take tons of pictures. The weather was close to rain, but always dry and showing nice clouds for lots of ambient light.

Die Rückfahrt traten wir insbesondere wegen drohenden Regens früh an. Das Glück dabei war, dass wir so noch Zeit fanden, den Son­nenuntergang bei den Felsen von Dyrhólaey zu geniessen. Diese Felsen sind von den Kräften des Meers geformte Tore. Vom Leuchtturm aus kann man sie wenige Schritte vom Parkplatz entfernt fotografieren. Besser wäre wohl nur noch eine Bootsfahrt. Und wenn man sich bei gutem Wetter umdreht (also bei uns im Januar), so blickt man direkt auf den berühmt berüchtigten Eyjafjallajökull, den Vulkan, der den Flugverkehr in Europa zum Stillstand ge­bracht hatte.

We returned after noon because we were expecting some rain. It did not come but we found some time to drive to Dyrhólaey for the sunset. These rocks have big doors that were formed by the sea. From the location of the lighthouse they can be seen very well, all within meters from the parking lot. A better view could only be reached by boat. And if you turn around, given a good view, you can see infamous Eyjafjallajökull in front of you, the volcano that stopped air traffic in Europe some years ago.

Im Winter kann man in Island die Nordlichter sehen. Also schauten wir am Abend gespannt auf das Wetter. Es war stark bewölkt, aber man sah immer wieder Lücken in der Wolken­decke. Deshalb gingen wir nochmals raus und fuhren zurück zum Skogafoss. Viel Aurora war auf den Bildern leider dann doch nicht zu entdecken, aber immerhin konnte ich zum er­sten Mal die Milchstrasse fotografieren.

In winter time you can see northern lights in Iceland. So we excitedly watched the weather forecast in the evening. It was cloudy but there were patches of open sky. So we decided to go out again and drove back to Skogafoss. There was not much aurora on the pictures but for the first time I could take pictures of the milky way.

Nicht nur photographisch einer der schönsten Orte Islands ist Jökulsarlón. Im Südosten Islands erreicht der Gletscher Vatnajökull die Meereshöhe. Durch den Schmelzprozess ent­stand ein See, in den der Gletscher Eisberge kalbt. Weil dieser See direkt mit dem Meer verbunden ist, bewegen sich diese Eisberge mit den Gezeiten. Viele verlassen den See und werden später bei Flut an den schwarzen Strand angeschwemmt. Somit ergeben sich stetig ändernde Motive. Wer geduldig und vorsichtig ist, kann die Eisberge zusammen mit dem abfliessenden Wasser in Langzeitbelich­tungen in Szene setzen. Aber Vorsicht: Die Strömung ist gefährlich, das Wasser eiskalt und die Eisberge können einen Menschen mit Leichtigkeit erdrücken.

One of the most beautiful locations in Iceland, not just for photographers. Glacier Vatnajökull reaches sea level in southeastern Iceland. A lake of melted ice is filled with icebergs broken off the glacier. Because that lake is directly connected with the sea the icebergs move with the tide. Many leave the lake and can later be found on or close to the black beach. That means that there are lots of ever changing motifs. Those who stay for a long time and are cautious can realize long time exposures with the icebergs and the receding sea. But be really careful: The current is very dangerous, the water is icy and the icebergs could easily crash a human.

Wir verbrachten zweimal den Morgen am Gletscherstrand. Einmal fuhren wir auch noch zum zweiten Gletschersee - Fjallsárlón - der etwas höher gelegen ist und keinen Kontakt zum Meer hat. Dort kann man sich normaler­weise auf dem Eis bewegen und so die Eis­berge aus nächster Distanz photographieren. Wegen der relativ hohen Temperaturen war das Eis aber geschmolzen, die Motive waren somit begrenzt. Deshalb kehrten wir schon bald zurück an den unteren Gletschersee und konnten dort einen wunderschönen Sonnenun­tergang ablichten.

We spent two mornings at the glacier beach. Once we went to the second glacier lake - Fjallsárlón - that is located somewhat higher and does not have contact with the sea. There you can walk on the ice and shoot the icebergs from very close if there is any ice. Because of the high temperatures the ice had melted the week before and so the possibilities for nice pictures were limited. That is why we returned to the lower lake and could enjoy an excep­tional sunset.

Am Abend fuhren wir nochmals an den Jökul­sarlon, und zwar mit dem Ziel, doch noch die Nordlichter erleben zu können. Die Prognosen für das Wetter waren sehr unsicher, wir erfuhren später, dass wir am fast einigen Ort Islands waren, wo es in dieser Nacht nicht reg­nete. Und die Show war phänomenal: Zuerst entdeckten wir einen gelblichgrünen Halbkreis über den Bergen, dann entwickelte sich das Licht und schliesslich hatten wir das Gefühl, dass der ganze Himmel tanzt. Wer so etwas noch nie erlebt hat, dem empfehle ich dringend eine Winterreise an den Polarkreis, denn keine Dokumentarsendung und kein Photo kann wiedergeben, was Nordlichter sind.

In the evening we went back to Jökulsarlón, hoping to see the northern lights. The weather forecast was not good, later we realized that we were at the only place in Iceland where it was not raining that night. And the show was phenomenal: First we discovered a yellow greenish bow above the mountains. It got stronger and finally we felt like the sky were dancing for us. To those of you who have never seen that I can only recommend to book winter holidays around the arctic circle. No photo­graphy or documentary can ever reproduce how you perceive the polar lights when you see them yourself.

Am dritten Tag in dieser Region bestiegen wir erneut einen Superjeep. Erneut ging es zu einer Gletscherhöhle, diesmal eine, die durch einen Bach im Gletscher Breiðamerkurjökull geformt wurde. Erneut hatten wir unbeschreib­liches Glück, denn kurz nach Sonnenaufgang schien das Licht direkt in die Höhle. Dabei ent­stand ein Lichtspiel der Reflexionen im Eis, dass man gar nicht wusste, ob man noch pho­tographieren oder nur geniessen sollte. Es hätte ja auch regnen oder schneien können...

On the third day in this area we got on another super jeep. Again we were heading for an ice cave. This second one was formed by a stream in the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull. And again we had very much luck: Shortly after sunrise the sun was shining directly in the cave. A light game of reflections in the ice was the result. We were not sure whether we should take pictures non-stop or just enjoy the view. Imagine, it could have been raining or snowing...

Im Anschluss an diesen Ausflug fuhren wir zurück nach Reykjavík, wo wir die letzte Nacht des leider schon zu Ende gehenden Workshops verbrachten.

After that excursion we drove back to Reykjavík where we spent the last night of the workshop that was about to end, unfortunately.

Am Morgen starteten wir noch zur letzen Exkursion des Workshops: Þingvellir National­park. Dieser befindet sich auf dem Riss zwischen den tektonischen Platten Europas und Nordamerikas. Hier kann man also sozu­sagen zu Fuss den Kontinent wechseln, wenig­stens geologisch betrachtet. Meine Photos wurden nicht mehr so toll, wahrscheinlich war ich langsam etwas müde. Spannend waren aber die Eiskletterer, die einen gefrorenen Wasserfall bezwangen. Action- statt Land­schaftsphotographie, zur Abwechslung.

In the morning we started for the last excur­sion of the workshop: Þingvellir National Park. It is located on a tectonic fold between the plates of Europe and Northern America. That means here you can walk from one continent to the other by foot, at least in tectonic view. My pictures from here are not really im­pressive, probably I was tired by that time. Fascinating were two ice climbers who enjoyed a frozen waterfall. Action instead of landscape photography, for a change.

Nach der Verabschiedung verbrachte ich den Nachmittag in Reykjavík: Ein paar Souvenirs für die Familie kaufen, endlich mal wieder einen guten Kaffee geniessen. Am Abend beschlos­sen wir kurzfristig, wegen angekündigter äus­serst starker Polarlichter mit einem Mietauto nochmals in den Þingvellir Nationalpark zu fahren. Leider war das Wetter nicht wirklich gut, sodass wir das Phänomen nur zwischen Wolken hindurch sehen konnten. Trotzdem ein schöner Abschluss dieser Woche in Island zusammen mit zwei tollen Guides und sehr netten Kursteilnehmern.

After saying good bye to the group I spent the afternoon in Reykjavík: Buying some souvenirs for the family and drinking the first tasty coffee for some time. In the evening we decided to rent a car and drive to Þingvellir National Park again. The reason was a forecast for very strong northern lights. Unfortunately the weather was not so good. We could only see a little of the phenomenom through clouds. But it was still a very nice ending of this week in Iceland together with two great guides and very nice participants.
